| This study aims to explore the differences in impulsivity and emotional regulation abilities between adolescents with major depressive disorder (MDD) who exhibit non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and those who do not. Additionally, it analyzes the impact of impulsivity and emotional regulation on self-injury behaviors in adolescents with MDD who exhibit NSSI.
Methods: A total of 184 adolescents diagnosed with MDD were included in this study. Based on the presence or absence of NSSI behaviors, participants were divided into two groups: the NSSI group (108 participants) and the non-NSSI group (76 participants). The Barratt Impulsiveness Scale-11th version (BIS-11) and the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ) were used to assess impulsivity and emotional regulation abilities in all participants. The two groups were first compared regarding their levels of impulsivity and emotional regulation. Correlation analysis was then conducted to explore the relationships between self-injury behaviors, impulsivity, and emotional regulation in the NSSI group. Furthermore, multiple regression analysis was conducted to reveal the predictive effects of impulsivity and emotional regulation variables on self-injury behaviors in the NSSI group.
Results: The NSSI group showed significant differences compared to the non-NSSI group in BIS-11, ERQ total scores, and all subscale scores (p < 0.05). Additionally, in the NSSI group, self-injury behaviors were significantly correlated with suicidal ideation, BIS-11 scores, and ERQ subscale scores (p < 0.05). Moreover, multiple regression analysis indicated that motor impulsiveness of the BIS-11 had the strongest predictive power for self-injury behaviors in the NSSI group (p < 0.05).
Conclusion: This study provides important evidence for a deeper understanding of the relationship between self-injury behaviors, impulsivity, and emotional regulation in adolescents with MDD and can guide the development of more effective intervention strategies. |
